![]() You’re a producer on the next adaptation, Paper Towns. I don’t remember a lot of the specific dialogue, but I do think they did an astonishingly good job of preserving the feel of the book. It was a little thing, something most people wouldn’t notice. ![]() It’s different from the book.” And she got out the book, and just took the line from the book. I remember one day when Shailene was doing a scene in the Literal Heart of Jesus and the cancer support group, and she came out and said, “I don’t understand this line. Green got close with TFIOS stars Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort. The thing that I found when I was on set was that lots of other people also felt close to it and protective of it. So I felt close to it, and protective of it. In some ways, I’ve been trying to write it since the beginning of my writing career. I definitely felt the responsibility of being the protector of it during this process, but I don’t think I was alone in that. But it’s also a very important story to me. It’s a very important story to a lot of them. I think we all had a healthy fear of what their expectations were and what their reaction would be. Was the potential fan reaction a stressor? It was their love of the book that brought them to the project, and the readers are so loyal to it, too. And in the end, I realized it was the right decision. My only note to them was to be less faithful! I said, “Don’t worry about the book.” But they did-they stayed really faithful. Scott and Mike just wrote a screenplay that was incredibly faithful to the book. Very early on, when it came to the screenwriters, for instance, the producers sent me The Spectacular Now script and the (500) Days of Summer script, and I really liked those. You spent a lot of time on set, but how involved were you? I just loved the movie, and it made me so grateful and so relieved. It mattered to everyone on that set-and that’s what made it so special to be there and to watch the movie and feel like we did it. They really wanted to stay true to the book, and that really mattered to them. I was thinking of the cast and the crew and everyone who’d come together to share their talents, and how much they wanted to make a faithful adaptation in this movie. The first time I saw the movie, I was crying throughout-partly because I was just emotionally invested in the story, but partly because I was just so overwhelmed with gratitude to all the people who worked on this movie. Does it hit you in the same way, considering you wrote the book? The Fault In Our Stars was the first screening I’ve been to where most of the audience was pretty much sobbing from beginning to end. But with TFIOS, as it’s called by his crew of passionate Nerdfighters, the author’s status has been elevated even further, earning him a spot on the Time 100 list, and the title of “prophet of YA.” No doubt a heavy weight. And in theory, a review or blurb from the author can propel a newbie writer onto the New York Times bestseller list. He makes fun and insightful videos with his pal and brother Hank. His books offer up a signature style that includes quirky, angsty protagonists and impossible young love, tempered with meatier themes like suicide and mortality. Green-known for his much-lauded YA novels, including Paper Towns and the Printz-winning Looking for Alaska-has always been popular amongst YA readers. And while stars Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort may inspire some of that ear-shattering adulation, any YA fan worth her (or his) salt knows that the majority are there for one man alone: John Green. For the past week, thousands of screaming teens have gathered in major cities like New York, Nashville, and Miami for sneak peeks at the big screen adaptation of the novel, The Fault in Our Stars.

It's one of the genuine shining moments where her voice and the music are perfectly matched. With "Ego" she drops a mock jazz bump that actually works, Beyonce playing with the punchy beat and letting out a slinky snarl in her voice. Overall the song has Beyonce sounding like she's trying to hard. However the over-repeated Jerry Maguire line "You had me at hello" seems a little cheesy. Then "Hello" flips the script, musically speaking, yet again, coming off like an amped up take on the various ballads that populate the first part of the album. "Video Phone" drops the bugged out Middle Eastern flavoring on the beat while Beyonce slurs her words in a teasing swagger. It's still not a stellar track, but is much better than the two previous numbers. "Sweet Dreams" brings things back to center thanks to a swirling synth groove and undulating electro rhythms. Additionally the track sounds like a Missy Elliott joint from a few years back, so it not only comes off awkward, but horribly dated. Then Beyonce attempts to rap like a bad girl on "Diva", which was a really bad idea. Both the track and her singing are thin and devoid of real emotion. Things fall apart rather quickly, however, with "Radio", which is an over-produced and uber slick number that pits to much treble induced electro shock against Beyonce's already thin mezzo-soprano. ![]() "Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)" is all mock Caribbean flair and booty shaking jubilation that should get even the most staid of listeners snapping their necks and gyrating joyfully. Just as you've warmed to the down-tempo balladeering Beyonce has set up with the first 10 tracks she pulls a serious bait-and-switch and lets her Sasha Fierce alter-ego out of the bag with a vengeance. The acoustic guitar trappings pop up again on "Satellites", which is easily one of the best of the mellow batch along with "Save the Hero". Acoustic guitar ripples through "Disappear" while strings create a mournfully thoughtful tone on "Broken-Hearted Girl." Both "Ave Maria" and "Smash Into You" present Beyonce in crystal clear form, offering up mellow accompaniment that highlights her often captivating voice (she's much more effective when not relying too much on the wavering vibrato and trill inflections). "Halo" continues in the down-tempo vein, albeit with rolling piano augmented by soul claps and step stomps while Beyonce dips in and out of vibrato yelps and trills. Not sure why she just didn't release two separate albums, since 19 tracks is quite a lot of music to digest, but that's neither here nor there.īeyonce comes out strong with the hit single "If I Were A Boy", a stripped down, introspective ballad that is actually quite poignant and manages to showcase Knowles' voice in a crisp and clean manner. The second part of the album (where she flips into Fierce mode) is all electro shock pop. Likewise her duel personalities deliver distinctly different sounds, with the first part of the album being all mellow, pop ballads served up in stark lushness. Knowles is served up in various fashionista poses, but her SF look is all Barbarella-meets-Alphaville-via-Bladerunner.
